A colostomy is when part of you colon is removed for a variety of reasons and the upper loose end of your bowel is poked through a hole in your stomach and stitched to the skin. This means your waste actually comes out through the colostomy in your side. A colostomy bag is then placed over the stoma (the extruding intestine) and is used to catch the waste.

Most colostomies are not permanent. Although some are. Mine was reversed after about three months.

Common causes of a colostomy are abdominal injuries, or wounds, Diverticulitis, colon cancer, or any other disease or injury to the colon.
